The Other Map: Fuerteventura

Whenever we think about paradise we always tend to think about a faraway place, one of those that can only be reached by a long-haul plane ride. But the more we travel, the more we value our country and we’ve realised that the best paradise is much closer than we’d thought.

The Canary Islands are, in our opinion, Paradise, and Fuerteventura is a true gem. It offers adventure, peace, nature, great food, respect for the environment, freedom and happiness. There’s such a huge contrast in the landscape: you can be on a beautiful beach and suddently come across sand dunes that look like they’re from another planet.
Fuerteventura will always be our paradise.

We started our adventure at the Avanti Hotel in Corralejo, a beautifully decorated tranquil spot inspired by sailor motifs boasting incredible sea views. The Rompeolas restaurant is inside the hotel, and it was one of our favourite culinary experiences from our stay on the island.

Isla de Lobos in one of the must-see places in Fuerteventura. It’s a tiny volcanic island found on the north of Fuerteventura and only accessible by boat where you’ll find volcanic landscapes and stunning beaches.

Going for a drive in a jeep around the island is a real adventure. If you set off from Majanicho, a tiny fishing village, to El Cotillo, driving past the Tostón lighthouse, you’ll come across gorgeous scenery filled with beaches with the perfect waves to go surfing.

We were introduced to The Clean Ocean Project in Lajares. It’s been going since the year 2000 and it’s seeking to protect oceans, beaches and water by trying to raise social awareness and encouraging people to look after nature.

Antigua and Betancuria are also worth a visit. The view from the roads is to die for and the drive will allow you to see the huge contrast in the island’s landscape as you leave behind its driest part and you head into lush green surroundings. There is no better way to test the Canary Island’s cuisine than going to Casa Santa Maria, one of the classic culinary stops.

One of our most special trips was the visit to Verdeaurora, a space that has been used for agricultural tourism for the last three decades and showcases the island’s commitment to preserving nature. It’s the best way to find out how aloe vera can be grown in a sustainable way.
