Amsterdam City Guide

Amsterdam is one of our favorite cities in the world. Its canal, the sounds of the bikes, its brick buildings pointing to the sky and all the stories that cross its streets make it one of our favorite European cities. In this guide we will pick some of our favorite spots and expand on our next upcoming visits. It doesn’t matter when you read this: we want to go back.

SLEEP

If we have to recommend a place to sleep in Amsterdam it is undoubtedly the Volkshotel. Its themed rooms, its cafeteria and the workspace at the hall makes it more of an experience than a conventional hotel.

COFFEE

If you are coffee lover, like us, these are some of our favorite cafés is the city of canals.

Latte at Benji's.

Toki combines a delicious coffee with a minimal interior with a touch of terrazzo, a place to enjoy with your palate and with a view. Scandinavian Embassy is another one of our favorites with healthier options to go along with your coffee and Bocca Coffe is another of our favorite coffee temples.

Breakfast a Beter & Leuk.

EAT

Amsterdam offers hundreds of dining options. But in the case you need some advice we recommend:

Benji's interiors.

Coffee & coconuts, aside from the coffee and coconuts, it is a multi-storey temple dedicated to the art of breakfast/eating good and well. Benji’s is ideal if you like healthy food and want to eat in a place surrounded by plants. Libertine is perfect to enjoy its interior and its dishes with glass of wine. However if you prefer something fast but delicious we recommend The Lebanese Sajeria, in Nine Streets, a small place that offers the best lebanese street food and in which makes it difficult to not repeat.

SHOPPING

Walking along the Nine Streets and Pijp its something we recommend to everyone, there are dozens of shops for every taste. But if we had to recommend some of our favorites in the city these would be the ones:

Welcome to Hutspot.

Hutspot is one the most mythical, a mixture of fashion, local design, art and with a photo booth that we’re sure you will use. The Otherist is a little store we discovered by chance and is something like a box of curiosities filled with incredible objects, nature, butterflies and insects (yes, decorative).

For design and furniture lovers: HAY Amsterdam.

Droog is a contemporary conceptual space dedicated to design, fashion and art with temporary exhibitions. Moise Store has a selection of garments from some of our favorite designers and an incredible interior full of mirrors, neons and cement. And if you like paper, you have to visit Athenaeum Boekhandel. We love the selection of magazines and fanzines among which we can spend hours searching for relics.

VISIT

Although a lot of people would like to walk by Damrak, one of the most famous streets and with one of the most typical views of Amsterdam, we recommend one of our favorite areas of Amsterdam, The Nine Streets.

Where's Mike?

Taking a tour of them across the canals is an experience, full of corners to photograph and with coffee shops, second-hand shops and restaurants for every taste.

Amsterdam is a city famous for its cultural offerings, Moco and Foam Museum in Amsterdam are only some of them. However for us its almost like a fetish to go visit the botanical garden in every city we know and, the Hortus Botanicus of Amsterdam, couldn’t be less comparative. It has different greenhouses, one of them where you can walk around surrounded by butterflies, and a pretty tasty cafe to rest a little bit. If you are more of a bicycles and a park, we recommend Vondelpark

Latte at Benji's.

Breakfast a Beter & Leuk.

EAT

Welcome to Hutspot.

For design and furniture lovers: HAY Amsterdam.

Where's Mike?
