Naranjo—Etxeberria

White walls, magazines and posters everywhere. Cookbook, Loewe, a Sabrina Salerno’s vinyl, Pollock’s picture on the wall and typography harmony in the air that feels better than waking up late on a sunday. The first time we visited Naranjo Etxeberría studio something caught my attention.

Once we were talking to them, they sat, opened their notebooks and began to take notes of everything we told them.

Diego had the notebook full of big letters, no sense drawings and those kind of things. Miki seemed to divide the paper with invisible lines by his clean, tidy and almost hieroglyphic writing. Miki and Diego are the founders of Naranjo-Etcheverría design studio and as well the artists that are behind this website layout. Designers or art directors? Let’s talk to them to discover it!

I have to ask about this because of my personal experience, who is who?

(Miguel) Naranjo – (Diego) Etxeberria.

Could you tell us what were you doing before creating Naranjo-Etxeberría?

Get ready for Naranjo-Etxeberría.

How did you two meet and how came the idea of working together?

We met in a Kebab place and we had the same concerns, we both ned to find our own direction and face new challenges.

What are your roles in Naranjo-etcheverría? How do you complement each other?

N-E is ever-changing. We aren’t actually a classic design studio. We are a collective of people that work in contemporary visual culture using concepts. N-E is a flexible team that works with professionals selected by empathy and mutually admiration. As a result we have a multidimensional approach focused in different kind of projects and areas. Every part of N-E has a different function, but of course we all have the same aim. We like to think we are like an orchestra or a football team, where all the people has different functions but the same goal.

You began this project in 2014 and now you became an actual reference in design world. You knew how to adapt yourselfs to every platforms and forms. We could say that actually you mixed different areas and laid the foundation of design at all levels. It’s so easy to say, but it was a long way to get in there. How has it been? what were the most hard challenge you faced?

The biggest challenge was, is and will always be to never stop. Work opening new ways and be always thinking what’s next.

Related to the question before, as artists, and even knowing that design is quite important nowadays, we have to ask. Do you think that design is still undervalued or this was just in the past?

Actually, we are not artists, we always knew it. We work in visual culture but with the limits that every project has. Design is valued by people that always valued it, the ones that never appreciated design, will never do it.

What has changed from the beginning of your career to now?

Everything and nothing at the same time. As we said before, we work in constant change. We obligate ourselves to change but not losing our essence.

Apart from you professional projects, what about your personal ones? Do you have any of them that you are specially proud of? Are you currently working on a personal project?

Our philosophy is based on be proud of every work we do, we try to deal with each of them by thinking about overcoming. We are working now with Cali Thornhill DeWitt, in the new Cookbook Magazine edition, is a project that will be a before and after in the studio path.

How do you feel having created the new Cup of Couple face and website?

Nowadays blogs are like old newspapers. Blogs are the place where you can find interesting daily content. If before we had the picture in our mind of people reading the newspaper in the train, bus, coffee shops and restaurants, now what we imagine is people looking at the phone, ipads… whatever. This transition is what we wanted to transmit with the new face of Cup of Couple: An editorial layout exported to digital world. And then that new digital language can be exported again to the editorial platform. This way we close the circle.

I think we talked enough about design, could you tell me about another passion?

Fashion and art.

And to end up, we would like you to recommend a book, a tv serie, a website and magazine.

A book: Things, George Perec (1965)
A Tv serie: The Young Pope, Paolo Sorrentino (2016)
Web: Tupac.com, Folder Studio (2016)
A magazine: 032C, Joerg Koch (2000)

(Miguel) Naranjo – (Diego) Etxeberria.

Una serie: The Young Pope, Paolo Sorrentino (2016)
Una web: Tupac.com, Folder Studio (2016)
Una revista: 032C, Joerg Koch (2000)
