José Antonio Roda

Is incredible how fast time goes by. It was just four years ago when we met Jose Antonio Roda, four years since we had our first beers together while he was thinking about all his new projects, and four years since we have breakfast with the mugs he designed. Last Sunday we came to his workshop next to El Rastro, and we guarantee he gave color to our Sunday.

The first thing that catch our attention is the “about” part of your website. “I draw pictures”, no more, no less. When did you begin to enjoy drawing?

Even if I always liked to make creative things, it was just five years ago when I began drawing. Anyway I have to be honest, I really feel passion about it for two years now. I actually begin to feel that I have created my own language and universe a short time ago. In any case, I know I used to enjoy drawing more when I was younger and I lived with my parents, in that time I hadn’t got any worries, I hadn’t got to pay bills and it wasn’t a professional thing, I draw just for pleasure. I’m pretty sure that if in the future I have to work in any other thing, I’ll paint in my free time, I need paint as much as I need to eat or sleep. I need it to feel good, for me draw is a need.

Would you say that one of your success secrets could be the simplicity of colors and lines that you use for create you paintings?

I don’t know, but i don’t think so. First of all we should define what success means, but that’s not the question. I strongly believe that the more simple the message is, the best, and it will be easily accepted. In this way, the simplicity of my work makes it easy to recognise. In any case, that’s not exactly my goal, it’s more related to my vision of everything and how I like things: simple, friendly and pretty. In all my pictures, for the moment, you can see more a “shape” work than a background work. I like to simplify things. I remember that during my student life, I used to make good summaries and schemes, and my drawings are exactly like that. Simple colors and lines have much to do with kid’s world, and I’m more interested about kid’s world than adults.

Following your answer, what’s for you success?

If the people that loves me is happy, that means I’ve succeed, being proud of my work, share everything I do with people I love and make them glad for me. Have money enough to pay my rent, self-employed fee and live (the last one is the more difficult).

Not all of them, but most of your creations are women, why?

I like them more, they are more beautiful. Because they have been and the still are fucked. Because they are better. Because everything should be feminine. Because we owe it to them. Because i prefer them even in the graphic and artistic point of view. I don’t feel really comfortable talking about this right now, because we are in a real delicate moment and it seems that everything is able to be misunderstood. It seems that everything that you can say, it will be criticized by somebody of one or the other side. We have the misogyny very linked with our culture, and i don’t want in any case that someone understand the message i want to transmit in a wrong way. I would have loved to be a woman, or a black woman or trans or any other type of person historically oppressed (and haven’t been killed for it, of course!). All the things that white heterosexual and rich men have undervalued and calificated as bad… that’s what is good for me. That’s exactly where beauty and truth is. Variety is always a good thing.

We talked before about when you began to feel that drawing is your thing, but we would like to know when did you began to do papercut?

It was two years ago as well. I saw Juan Diego Gonzálvez’s work, an illustrator from Murcia that worked with this technique, I really liked it and I came to a workshop he made in Madrid. At the beginning i didn’t think it was going to be “my thing”, it requires patience and ability. When I tried to practice with my own pictures it was different, everything changed. I’ve discovered new things and nowadays i’m really proud of my work in paper. Paper is also a really democratic material, we use it since we are kids. I actually want to continue investigating this technique and have the chance to make bigger and more complicated works.

Your work is pretty good defined: Cubist inspiration, geometric shapes and primary colors. Have you ever thought about changing any of these aspects or try another style?

I see my style as something absolutely open, growing up and alive. I’ve never planned my style and my career. Everything comes from passion and intuition. In the meantime that you work, you grow up and learn. I’m not interested on repeating the same formula all the time, i’m more bothered about not getting stuck. I don’t think i am the worst or the best illustrator, so i’m not worried about the changes, i think my style is in my hands and head. Anyway is beautiful to learn.

What is normally on your desk?

Nothing really exotic and eccentric. A pair of sketch pads, my personal notebook, pencils, scalpel, ruler and a bottle of water. If someone was thinking about flowers and those kind of things… that’s not me. I’m just a painter, not a damned artist. Sorry not sorry.

What artists inspire you or are your references?

A lot actually! I love the work of Eduardo Arroyo, Mariscal, Leger, Haring. Alx Katz, Maruja Mayo, Miller Goodman, Saul Steinberg, Malevich, Girard… And othe kind of artist like Mayte Alvarado, Chema Peral, Susie Hamer, Teresa Bellón, Andy Rementer, Miguel Ángel Caprubí, Blanca Gómez, Ingela Parrhenius, Eleonora Arosio, Gosia Herba, Steffie Brocoli, Justyna Stasik, las Cachete Jack, Olga Capdevilla, Lisa Laubreaux, Violeta Soy, Raúl Soria…There’s a lot of people doing pretty things!

A year ago you painted a wall in honour of LGTBQ collective at Barceló market, how was that experience?

It was incredible! See my work on large scale during a week for all the people that was walking around there, was a very beautiful experience. In addition, it was an honour that a big company as instagram called me to work in defence of love and respect. It was a gift for me, and I felt so proud. At the inauguration came people from Madrid council and it was so exciting. Those were really special days, and I would have liked to share that moment with my parents, brother and friends from my city. And of course as I said, I’m so grateful with Instagram as well for counting with me.

Regarding to this, you designed instagram stickers that everybody liked a lot! How was the moment that Instagram contacted you? How did you live that moment?

Wow! Thank you very much, at the beginning I was so shocked and I couldn’t believed it. After that I felt so lucky and grateful. First of all they asked me to design geostickers for different places of Madrid (Chueca, El Prado, La Latina), and after that, they asked me about the pride sticker. If I remember well, Instagram asked only to five illustrators all around the world to design those stickers, so I was so proud of being one of them. In addition, the sticker was supposed to be just one month in instagram, and right now is still available to use. Is a really tiny piece but a big work made from love. See how people keep using it, has been really exciting.

What plans do you have? What would you like now to happen in your career?

Just continue! I’d like to grow up and learn, continue paying the cost of living. I’m not in a hurry and I think that a well done work is the one that takes time. I want to make more and better works. I want that people with enough resources honestly appreciate my work. Collaborate with people and brands that can pass my creations on to more people. Produce better and more beautiful objects. Continue exposing my work keeping the motivation. I’d love to make more editorials for newspapers and magazines, etc. Another thing that i’d love to do, is make this world a bit better with my work, and, to end up, earn more money just to go once a year on holidays and going out for dinner twice a week without feeling guilty

Me gusta simplificar.

Vas trabajando, vas aprendiendo y vas creciendo.

Sorry not sorry.
